Delight in the classic combination of savory ham and melted Gruyère cheese encased in flaky, golden puff pastry. These easy-to-make Ham and Cheese Puff Pastry bites are perfect for snacks, appetizers, or a light meal, enhanced with a touch of Dijon mustard and optionally topped with everything bagel seasoning for extra flavor.

Ingredients

Dough

  • 490 grams puff pastry, thawed (2 sheets)

Filling

  • 285 grams sliced deli ham
  • 225 grams Gruyère cheese slices
  • 80 millilitres Dijon mustard (optional)

Finishing

  • 1 large egg, whisked
  • Everything bagel seasoning (optional)

Instructions

  1. Thaw Puff Pastry: Remove the puff pastry sheets from the packaging and allow them to thaw until pliable, making them easier to roll and cut.
  2. Preheat Oven and Prepare Baking Sheet: Preheat your oven to 220°C (428°F) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  3. Cut Puff Pastry: Roll out each puff pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface and cut each sheet into 6 rectangles using a sharp knife or pizza cutter. Optionally, gently roll the rectangles into squares for a uniform shape.
  4. Assemble Filling: Brush the edges of each pastry rectangle with the whisked egg to help seal them. Spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard in the center if using, then place a slice of Gruyère cheese and a folded slice of deli ham on top.
  5. Fold and Seal Pastries: Fold one corner of each rectangle toward the center, then fold the opposite corner over to fully enclose the filling. Press gently on the edges to seal the pastry securely.
  6. Prepare for Baking: Arrange the filled pastries on the prepared baking sheet. Brush the tops with the remaining egg wash and sprinkle everything bagel seasoning on top if desired.
  7. Bake Pastries: Bake the pastries in the preheated oven for 18 to 22 minutes, or until they are golden brown, puffed up, and the cheese inside has melted thoroughly.
  8. Cool and Serve: Remove the pastries from the oven and let them cool briefly. Serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • Ensure puff pastry is well thawed but still cool for easier handling and better puff.
  • Dijon mustard is optional but adds a pleasant tang that complements the ham and cheese.
  • Everything bagel seasoning adds extra flavor and a nice visual finish but can be omitted if preferred.
  • Keep an eye on pastries as oven temperatures may vary; remove once golden and puffed.
  • These pastries are best served warm but can be reheated gently in the oven.
