These Savory Christmas Pinwheels with Bacon & Cheese are a perfect holiday appetizer featuring flaky puff pastry rolled with a creamy mixture of cheddar cheese, cream cheese, crispy bacon, and green onions. Easy to prepare and irresistibly delicious, they make a festive snack or party treat.

Ingredients

Puff Pastry

  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed

Filling

  • 5–6 strips bacon, cooked and crumbled
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 2–3 green onions, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Egg Wash

  • 1 egg, beaten

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Bacon: Cook the bacon in a skillet over medium heat until crispy. Remove it from the pan, drain on paper towels, let cool, then crumble into small pieces.
  3. Mix Filling: In a mixing bowl, combine softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon, chopped green onions, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  4. Prepare Puff Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet until it is about 1/8 inch thick, smoothing out any creases and ensuring an even thickness.
  5. Spread Filling: Evenly spread the cream cheese mixture over the surface of the puff pastry, leaving about a 1/2 inch border around the edges to facilitate sealing the roll.
  6. Roll Pastry: Starting from one end, tightly roll the puff pastry into a log shape, gently pressing the edge to seal and keep the roll intact during slicing and baking.
  7. Slice Pinwheels: Using a sharp knife, slice the rolled log into 1/2-inch thick pinwheels. You should get approximately 12 to 15 pieces.
  8. Arrange Pinwheels: Place the pinwheels on the prepared baking sheet, leaving about 1 inch of space between each to allow for expansion while baking.
  9. Apply Egg Wash: Brush the tops of the pinwheels with the beaten egg to give them a golden brown and shiny finish when baked.
  10. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18 minutes or until the pinwheels are puffed, golden brown, and cooked through.
  11. Cool and Serve: Remove the pinwheels from the oven and let them cool for 5 minutes before serving to allow flavors to set and prevent burns.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit bacon and add extra cheese or vegetables like spinach.
  • Make sure the puff pastry is fully thawed for easier rolling and even baking.
  • You can prepare the pinwheels in advance and bake just before serving to keep them fresh and crispy.
  • Use sharp knife to slice the roll to prevent squashing the pinwheels.
  • If you prefer a milder flavor, reduce the garlic powder or omit the green onions.
