Ingredients

Dough Base

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Add-ins

  • 1 tablespoon matcha powder (culinary grade)
  • ½ cup white chocolate chips (or chopped white chocolate)

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, use an electric mixer on medium speed to cream the softened butter and granulated sugar until the mixture becomes light, fluffy, and pale in color.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: Mix in the egg and vanilla extract thoroughly until fully incorporated into the creamed mixture.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add this dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing gently until a soft dough forms; avoid overmixing to keep the dough tender.
  4. Divide and Flavor Dough: Split the dough evenly into two separate bowls. Fold the matcha powder gently into one half of the dough until it is evenly green. Fold the white chocolate chips into the other half evenly.
  5. Create the Swirl Log: Take portions of each dough half, press them together, and roll into a log shape. Gently twist and shape this log to create a swirl effect with distinct green and white streaks throughout.
  6. Chill the Dough: Wrap the twisted dough log tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to firm up and enhance the flavors.
  7. Prepare for Baking: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and promote even baking.
  8. Slice and Arrange: Remove the chilled dough log from the refrigerator and slice it into ½-inch thick rounds. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart to allow for slight spreading.
  9. Bake the Cookies: Bake the cookies for 12 minutes, or until the edges turn golden while the centers remain soft. After baking, allow the cookies to rest on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Be careful not to overmix the dough once the flour is added to maintain a tender texture.
  • Use culinary grade matcha powder for the best flavor and vibrant green color.
  • If white chocolate chips are unavailable, finely chopped white chocolate bars can be used as a substitute.
  • Chilling the dough log is crucial for easy slicing and to maintain the swirl pattern.
  • Store baked cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
