This Garlic Butter Mussels appetizer is a flavorful and elegant dish that combines fresh mussels steamed to perfection and topped with a rich garlic butter sauce, Parmesan cheese, and fresh herbs. Perfect for impressing guests or enjoying a sophisticated snack at home.

Ingredients

For the Mussels

  • 2 pounds mussels fresh and tightly closed

For the Garlic Butter

  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic fresh, minced
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese grated (can substitute with Romano)
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley chopped
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest (can substitute with vinegar)
  • salt to taste
  • pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Clean the mussels: Rinse the mussels under cold running water to remove dirt and sand. Discard any that are cracked or remain open when tapped.
  2. Steam the mussels: In a large pot, add ¼ cup of water and bring to a boil. Add the cleaned mussels, cover, and steam for 4 minutes or until the mussels have opened.
  3. Prepare the garlic butter mixture: In a mixing bowl, combine the unsalted butter, minced garlic, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped parsley, lemon zest, salt, and pepper. Mix well until fully incorporated.
  4. Arrange the mussels: Remove the steamed mussels from the pot, discard any unopened shells, and carefully loosen the mussels from their bottom shells. Arrange the mussels on a baking sheet.
  5. Top with garlic butter and broil: Spoon the garlic butter mixture evenly over each mussel. Place the baking sheet under a broiler and cook for 4 minutes or until the tops are golden and bubbly.
  6. Serve immediately: Remove from the oven and garnish with extra parsley if desired. Serve hot with crusty bread to soak up the delicious garlic butter sauce.

Notes

  • Ensure mussels are fresh and tightly closed before cooking to avoid any unsafe consumption.
  • Discard any mussels that do not open during steaming.
  • Use fresh lemon zest for the best flavor, but vinegar is an acceptable substitute in case lemon is unavailable.
  • Broiling time may vary; keep an eye to avoid burning the garlic butter topping.
  • Serve with crusty bread or garlic toast for a complete appetizer experience.
