Ingredients

Base Dough

  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cinnamon Sugar Layer

  • 1/2 cup (100g) packed brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, melted

Cream Cheese Frosting

  • 4 ounces (113g) cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup (57g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups (240g) powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper to ensure easy removal and cleanup.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt to evenly combine the leavening agents and flavorings.
  3. Cut in Butter: Add the cold, cubed unsalted butter and cut it into the dry mixture using a pastry cutter or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs, which helps create a tender crust.
  4. Add Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk and vanilla extract, then pour this mixture into the flour mixture. Stir gently until just combined to avoid overworking the dough.
  5. Form Base Layer: Press the dough evenly into the prepared baking pan, creating a uniform layer that will serve as the foundation for the bliss bars.
  6. Prepare Cinnamon Sugar: In a small bowl, mix together the packed brown sugar and ground cinnamon to create the cinnamon sugar topping.
  7. Add Cinnamon Sugar Layer: Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the dough base, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture on top, ensuring full coverage for maximum flavor.
  8. Bake: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown and set.
  9. Cool Base: Remove the bars from the oven and let them cool completely in the pan to ensure the frosting does not melt upon application.
  10. Make Frosting: Beat the softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth and creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract, beating until the frosting is light and fluffy.
  11. Frost and Serve: Spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the cooled cinnamon sugar bars. Cut into individual bars and serve. Enjoy your delightful cinnamon roll bliss bars!

Notes

  • Make sure the butter for the base is cold to create a crumbly texture.
  • For a stronger cinnamon flavor, you can increase cinnamon to 3 tablespoons.
  • Allow the bars to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting or sliding of the frosting.
  • Store leftover bars in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • These bars can also be frozen unfrosted for up to 2 months; thaw and frost before serving.
