Baked until golden and finished with a glossy egg wash, they’re irresistible party treats or an indulgent anytime snack.

Ingredients

For the Pastry

  • 1 sheet Puff Pastry (store-bought)

For the Filling

  • 6 slices Streaky Bacon, cooked and chopped
  • 1 cup Shredded Cheddar Cheese (or your favorite cheese)
  • 1/2 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese
  • 4 oz Cream Cheese (optional)
  • 2 tbsp Sour Cream (optional)

For Seasoning

  • 1 tsp Dried Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 tsp Black Pepper (to taste)
  • 1/2 tsp Turmeric or Paprika (optional)

For Finishing Touches

  • 1 unit Egg Yolk (for egg wash)
  • 2 tbsp Fresh Parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
  2. Roll Pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry sheet until it is about ⅛-inch thick, creating a uniform base for the filling.
  3. Spread Cream Cheese Mixture: If using, evenly spread cream cheese and sour cream over the rolled out pastry to add creaminess and help the filling stick.
  4. Add Cheese and Seasoning: Sprinkle shredded cheddar and grated Parmesan cheese over the cream cheese layer, then dust with garlic powder, black pepper, and turmeric or paprika for added flavor and color.
  5. Layer Bacon: Lay the cooked and chopped streaky bacon strips evenly on top of the cheese mixture, pressing them in slightly so they adhere well.
  6. Cut and Twist: Slice the prepared pastry into 1-inch wide strips. Twist each strip gently to create spiral-shaped twists, which will bake up into crispy, layered snacks.
  7. Apply Egg Wash: Brush each twist with the beaten egg yolk to give them a beautiful golden shine when baked.
  8. Bake: Arrange the twists on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between each. Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until they turn golden brown and puffed up.
  9. Cool and Serve: Let the twists cool slightly on the baking sheet before serving warm. Optionally, garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color and freshness.

Notes

  • You can substitute cheeses to suit your preference, such as mozzarella or Gruyère for a different flavor profile.
  • For extra crispiness, ensure the pastry strips are not overcrowded on the baking sheet.
  • Twists can be made ahead and frozen before baking; bake directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the baking time.
  • Use gluten-free puff pastry if you want a gluten-free version of this recipe.
  • Adjust the seasoning to taste; add a pinch of chili flakes for a spicy kick if desired.
